How Jonathan Kelly Got the Idea of Squishmallows
Jonathan Kelly established Kelly Toys Holdings, Inc. in 1986 in Los Angeles, California, where the company’s headquarters is currently located.
According to a reliable source, Jonathan was recently seen in an interview with Yahoo Finance, where he clearly stated that his desire to create squishmallows stemmed from a trip to Japan.
On one of his visits to a grocery store, he came across some soft toys. These soft toy-like items in a Japanese store inspired him to come up with the idea for Squishmallows.
On his return from Japan, he discussed his new found idea with his team, and afterward, they swung into action, looking for a way to produce a loolk-alike of the Japanese soft toy.
According to Jonathan, it took him and his crew some time to create a “soft, charming, and kawaii” toy that looked like Japanese plush dolls.
A few years later, in 2018, Kelly Toys Holdings was bought by Jazwares Inc., a privately held firm, after working together for a year.
So Kelly Toys Holding improved its position in the market for toys and gained new licenses for its brand.
How Squishmallows Gained Popularity
Squishmallows first gained popularity in 2020, during the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, when collectors shared photos of their plush toy collections on social media platforms with the hashtag “# Squishmallows,” garnering over 550 million views.
At the time of writing this post, Squishmallows had approximately 150,000 Twitter followers and nearly 700,000 Instagram followers.
In less than five (5) years since its launch, Kelly Toys Holdings has sold over 60 million Squishmallows and over 30 million copies in the first two years of its inception.
Manufacturing Materials
Squishmallows are manufactured from plush spandex and stuffed with polyester fiber.
They are made in China, as stated on Squishmallows’ verified Twitter account.
Squishmallows were originally available in four distinct sizes, but are now available in twelve, ranging from 3.5 inches (clip-on) to 24 inches.
To keep their form and clean, squishmallows are produced as machine-plush toys that can be washed with cold water.
In order to avoid harming the polyester filling, don’t let it dry in temperatures that are too hot. Squishmallows that are authentic may be distinguished by their three connected tags.
Who Are the Retail Partners?
Squishmallows were originally offered only through the KellyToys website, but they eventually became accessible in retail locations through agreements with companies such as Walgreens, Amazon, and other retailers.
Squishmallows may now be available at a variety of places, including Costco, CVS, Five Below, GameStop, and Walmart, to name a few examples.
Squishmallows are now available for purchase in several countries, including Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Squishmallow Pricing and Collectability
In order to meet the high demand for the toy, Squishmallows are frequently offered at a higher price by resellers. However, you can get it at a cheaper rate if you can get it directly from Kelly Toys Holdings.
The typical resale price for a Squishmallow is determined by the size, quality, and uniqueness of the exact item being offered. So, the bigger the squish, the higher the price.
Some squishmallows, particularly those that are limited edition or in great demand, can fetch hundreds or even thousands of dollars from resellers and collectors. A good example is the 24-inch squishmallow.
Jack the Black Cat, distinguished by its closed white eyes and black whiskers, is one of the most sought-after Squishmallows that have been released to date.
Indeed, looking at the search trends on Google, you will understand how Jack the Black Cat squishmallows are demanded.
A surprising event was noticed on Kelly Toys’ official website in 2020, when KellyToys announced the availability of a limited-edition stuffed animal, which sold out within two hours of being up.
Jack the Black Cat is available for purchase on third-party websites such as eBay, where the cat is priced at roughly $2,000.
